Frequently asked questions
How do I measure seconds per item honestly?
Time a full count from the first item to the last number entered, including walking between areas and any typing into a spreadsheet afterwards. Divide total seconds by items counted. Do it twice on different days and use the average.
Is the savings figure money I will actually see?
Only if the freed hours turn into fewer paid hours or into work that was otherwise not getting done, like checking pars or dating product. For a salaried manager the saving is time and attention rather than a payroll line, which is still real but harder to bank.
Should I include the cost of a new inventory tool?
This calculator leaves it out on purpose so the labor figure stays clean. Take the annual labor saved and subtract whatever a new process or subscription costs per year to see the net; if the result is small, a better count sheet order alone may be the right first move.
What counts as an item for this estimate?
Each line on your count sheet: a case of tomatoes, a bottle of vodka, a bag of rice. If you count the same item in two locations, it is two lines. Reducing lines by consolidating storage is one of the simplest ways to bring the total time down.
